He said to me, “I want you to help me develop mental toughness.”

“What for?” I asked.

“I make great money but my job is very high pressure. There are a lot of big personalities. A lot of jerks. I have to deal with a lot of BS,” he said.

“So you want me to help you be mentally tougher so you can tolerate more pressure and jerks and BS?” I asked.

He paused.

“I never really thought of it that way but yeah,” he said.

“I don’t want to help you do that,” I said. I could feel his slight shock.

“I’d rather help you develop your own sense of authority so that you don’t tolerate that kind of stuff,” I continued. He was quiet.

“What if mental toughness meant that you wouldn’t allow that kind of BS into your life? What if mental toughness meant you knew you could always say ‘no’ instead of thinking you had to take it?”

How would that change things for you?
